The Story

This release is limited to 500 copies.

On 22 December 1988, Morrissey performed for the first time as a solo artist, performing to 3,000 adoring fans at the Civic Hall, in Wolverhampton.

Whilst this was officially Morrissey’s first solo gig, it was originally intended as a farewell concert for the Smiths. Morrissey was backed by former bandmates Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, as well as the Smiths’ one-time touring guitarist, Craig Gannon.

The setlist featured a mixture of Morrissey numbers, alongside Smiths material from 1987, so none of it had been performed in front of a live audience before. Featured here, are fantastic renditions of classics such as Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before, Suedehead, Interesting Drug and many more.

The build up to the event is almost as biblical as the performance itself. The gig had all the quirks you’d come to expect of the man: it was free entry, but you were only allowed in if you were wearing Smiths or Morrissey merchandise. Some reports state that up to 20,000 came with the hope of getting in on the night.
